Ut pictura, poesis: diálogo(s) inter-artes no romance Uma Florença para Caravaggio, de Diomira Maria

Abstract

This article seeks to highlight the inter-arts link that dominates the work A Florence for Caravaggio, by the Brazilian writer Diomira Maria. The narrator’s speech takes us back to Florence, the city where the Medicis family lives, a refined and culturally flourishing space, where the artists of the Italian Renaissance dialogue, in the highest cultural spheres. In a journey that is made by walking, sometimes hurriedly, sometimes slowly, the reader discovers the human landscape and the natural landscape the human landscape and the natural landscape under the aegis of sight, but also of the other senses. The route taken in the construction site can serve as a basis for a contemporary sightseeing tour. In a literary revisitation, it is possible to take a route that refers to the spaces focused on in the work, that can translate a “tourism literature”, which can be visited: the bridge di Vecchio, with its workshops and shops; the cathedral of Florence; the baptistery; the streets; the most prominent palaces in the city; convents; the churches; the galleries where art takes refuge. The plot that involves the love affair between Marie de’ Medici – future queen of France – and the Milanese painter Michelangelo Caravaggio serves as a pretext for touching on various themes. And so, before the reader’s eyes, the arts emerge, both because of the approach that is made to them in the dialogues of the characters, and because of the result effectively achieved by the artists, from which painting, the theatre, architecture and sculpture stand out. Among them, the problematic of art in the feminine or the importance of female education, and immerses the reader in an art doubly architected: that of narration and that of painting.
