Analysis on the quality of the digital media in Cuenca, Ecuador: case of social demonstrations in 2019
Abstract
Practically two years have passed since the events occurred during the national strike of 2019, therefore, the repercussion can be organized through the premises of credibility, coverage and novelty allowing to analyze this situation objectively, managing to recognize if in fact, the media in question presented a vision of the facts through equity, level of access to sources, style, content and emphasis. From there, it is intended to review the informative quality of the most relevant digital media from Cuenca during the demonstrations of October 2019 in Ecuador. The methodological approach that governs this research is deductive-quantitative of descriptive scope, whose tool is content analysis. After applying the 25 criteria on news quality to 354 total news items between both digital newspapers, it was determined that the criteria called ideological balance of the columnists and average number of sources per news unit had a significant impact on the quality of the newspapers. Likewise, shortcomings were evidenced in the coherence of the photographs with the texts, linguistic correctness and comprehensibility. However, there was also a clear interest in investigative journalism aimed at social problems.
