Proposal for definition in Media Education with an approach to digital capitalism
Abstract
Media Education (ME) is a broad topic, which generates disparate educational approaches. This paper sought to reflect on ME from the perspective of digital capitalism. The objective was to reflect on the relevance of considering the dynamics of media business in ME proposals. The methodology used was a combination of the state of the art and telematic research with field study. The state of the art allowed us to clarify the originality of the work’s contribution to the field of knowledge. The telematic research was complemented by the identification, access and analysis of ME proposals made available in the learning environment of the Brazilian Ministry of Education. The field study diagnosed the understanding of university students regarding digital capitalism. The combination of different methods of data collection and analysis brought new perspectives on the topic. We highlight two results: a) in the process of Media Literacy, Media Competence is developed. This dynamic is called ME; b) the ME approach centered on digital capitalism awakens and focuses students’ attention on the functioning of the media and the interests involved. The contribution of this research is to demonstrate that the combination of EM anchored in digital capitalism, with the values approach, can recover the humanistic education project.
